Day 3 of Texas Southern University communication week was all about the field of Journalism that consist of a panelist of people who informed TSU communication students about the skills one needs to succeed in journalism today.
The panel took place in room 104 of the TSU Auditorium and produce a series of topics pertaining to Journalism. A two-part topic discussing “ Skills one needs to succeed in journalism today”, played a vital role in giving students informative knowledge.
“I help students transition from college to the professional sector effectively, I’m also the best selling author of a book called,” Master your career book resumes, it is an Amazon bestseller,” Social Media Maven and Career Coach Juanita Hines said.
One key factor that stood out the most was the art and ability to brand yourself when your not face to face with someone.
“Your brand is what people say about you when you are not in the room”, said Hines.
The use of social media plays an integral part when it comes to such things as branding yourself it gives people and companies who may want to hire you a glimpse into who you are, your interest, personality and other beneficial things of the sort.
“Linked is probably the best and one of the most effective resources that you can utilize for a job search and your LinkedIn profile will say a tremendous amount of things about you,”Hines said.
Another tool or avenue that can help journalist become more skillful at their craft other than social media is podcasting and different sorts of digital resource.
“Podcasting is a lot of work and if your able to have a co-host definitely jump on that share the work and if you are able to jump on another podcast as a co-host or maybe a guest do that,”Media Blogger Michelle Ngome said.
“You can start a podcast with your laptop start with your cell phone just recording yourself, I spend less than a hundred dollars a month on my podcast",Ngome said.
“I pay 20 dollars for a hosting company to send it off to iTunes, Spotify, Stitcher, Google Play, and the 80 dollars on editing because I don’t know how to edit and I pay the guy to edit my episodes",Ngome said.
The biggest take away that the panelist left students with was consistency. Being consistent is what will get you to where you want to go.
"Be consistent, yes life happens but you know just keep pushing and I know for me, I have my moment when I feel as though I am a mess and some moment I feel like I’m the best",Ngome said.
There are a host of things available to an aspiring journalist today but if you don't have the passion or consistent work ethic you will not be successful.
