February 26, 2012 at approximately 7:30 pm on a rainy wintry night in Sanford, Florida 17 year-old African American male Trayvon Martin is shot and killed while sporting a dark hoodie, bags of skittles, and a can of Arizona Watermelon Fruit Juice Cocktail by then 28- year-old mixed race male , George Zimmerman at The Retreat at Twin Lakes a gated community.
In response to the acquittal of Zimmerman a fiery yet unforgettable movement using just three simple words, Black Lives Matter would spark national controversy leaving people both white, some black, along with others asking the question, “What about Black on Black crime”?
The Black Matter movement specializes in accountability and the need for justice where there is an injustice. As a result, some people question why the plight of the black community is such an astonishing concern for a segment of American citizens all of a sudden.
“In regards to people bringing up the point of black on black crime when attempted discussions of police brutality of oppression come up I feel it is mostly to sway from the real topic,” Texas Southern University Political Science major Nahab Fahnbulleh said.
Although issues and questions pertaining to black on black crime may stem from those wanting to ignore injustice while others believing it's actually a problem, Texas Southern University Journalism Professor Napoleon Johnson’s believes both can mutually exclusive.
“Please, yes forever we talk a lot about police brutality and things like that against blacks but yes in the black community there is a lot of black on black crime”, Texas Southern University Journalism Professor Napoleon Johnson said while snickering.
“People want to ignore what’s right in front of their faces, police are fully trained and are acting in a way that reflects that poor training is usually a black person's eyes but black on black crime is brought up because people don’t want to acknowledge the issue,” said Napoleon Johnson.
The Federal Bureau Investigation Uniform Crime Reporting of 2016 shows that 90.1 percent of the crimes committed by blacks are to one another while 83.5 percent of the crimes whites commit are to one another.
These statistics alone tell a broader picture on what actually is black on black or if there is such a thing if black on black crime is a thing that’s brought up on occasion why not white on white crime, Is this notion of black on black crime a racial issue or just proximity in itself?
“I don't think it’s a racial thing but I don’t think it would really be proximity but yeah i guess it does end up being proximity because of the area they are, its a community issue and that’s just a lot of underlying issue in itself ”,Texas Southern University Broadcast Journalism Major Jasmine Gershanov said, while pausing between sentences so that she’s careful and informative with her thought and words.
Black on Black to some people is just a myth created by those who try to avoid the real issues of injustice people of color suffer from, whereas some people actually believe this is an issue, and there some in the like Napoleon Johnson who thinks the two can be mutually exclusive.
Now given the facts the FBI Uniform Crime Research do you believe in black on black crime?
